Artist Statement
I have always been curious and interested in experimenting with various materials and processes while reflecting current issues. I work in a mix of abstraction and representation in sculpture, printmaking and painting. As pioneer of digital painting, I had an interest in the nascent medium of using a computer to make art. As making electronically based art became more accepted I slowly began to incorporate traditional art materials into my work. As the screen and our “real” world diverged further, I became increasingly interested in what could not be done on a computer.
Exploration of materials has been a part of my practice along with the expansion of ideas around painting, printmaking and sculpture, including what may be considered the limits of those materials. In the digital work I manipulated standard graphic design programs to create swirling, colorful worlds that spoke of our time and expanded ideas of painting, as well as chance and errors (incorporating error patterns into my work). As virtual worlds became more present, I mixed the digital with traditional materials conflating them, the characteristics of one over the other becoming less apparent until the digital disappeared completely from my most recent work.
I began incorporating animals and natural forms into my work as climate change became more urgent and our virtual world became more present than our natural world for many. This happened to coincide with the Oxford Junior Dictionary replacing over 400 nature words (acorn, buttercup, etc) with technological terms from 2007 through 2008, though I was unaware of this change at the time. Interest in the expansion of painting, a celebration of nature and the mourning over climate change (through symbols like the Pin Oak leaf [the dead trees of which helped to spread California wildfires in 2020], jellyfish who thrive to the detriment of other species in warmer oceans and the invasive species works) continued to be themes in my paintings and sculpture. The increased devastation from Climate Change led to the Collapsed series and Monster series of sculptures.
My works become a records of the changes in our world visually over our lives in the last 30 years through medium and message.
